At his very core, Genesis is a man driven by ambition. From a young age, he had been an achiever, striving to win awards and be the best son he could be even with his advantage growing up wealthy. Although he could have so easily kicked back, stayed comfortable, and become a landlord in Banora like his father, he chose the more difficult route of forging a name for himself as a SOLDIER, with the ultimate goal of being an equal to Sephiroth and becoming like the hero spoken of in LOVELESS. Probably the instigator of their late nights sneaking into the training room for sparring and games, Genesis isn't afraid of breaking rules here and there.
However, Genesis' drive also makes him a formidable force to reckon with. The same energy he put into becoming Sephiroth's friend and equal quickly became channeled into taking Shinra and the entire planet down simply because he willed it so and because Hollander and Lazard gave him the means to do so. His strong desire to find healing, regain his SOLDIER pride, and see LOVELESS becoming a true story in his own eyes also kept him alive until the moment he encountered Zack in the caverns underneath Banora for a final duel. His drive to carry on the Goddess' will also kept him from participating in Deepground's activities and influenced his choice to seal himself up until the Planet needed him to defend it.
Drive isn't all that made Genesis one of Shinra's stars and greatest enemies. Despite being the failed experiment of Project G, Genesis is blessed with a special knack for socializing and simply clicking with people. Even if he wasn't Shinra's champion, he was able to take a large force of 3rd and 2nd class SOLDIERs with him and make them turn against the very company that produced them. In Crisis Core, he was also the object of two fanclubs: Red Leather and the LOVELESS Study Group. The fact that he was able to forge a tight friendship with the very private Sephiroth is also a testament to the way he does well with people, even with those who usually aren't keen on socializing.
Well-read and blessed with a brilliant mind since his childhood, Genesis has a way with words. He also has a quick wit and is open to poking fun at his own habits, as shown in the way he took a jab at Sephiroth having to hear him read aloud from LOVELESS for the goddess-knows-how-many-eth-time. His fondness for theater and poetry also show a lot in the way he talks and acts. Big, sweeping gestures are typical from him, and so are dramatic words.
However, even with his people skills, Genesis is just as guarded as Sephiroth is. Although he has two fan clubs, both weren't able to share much about Genesis' personal life. Throughout his story, he only got along on a personal level with Sephiroth and Angeal. It was only later on that Zack earned Genesis' trust in a roundabout way. It was shown in his final moments when he challenged him in a duel to end his life with honor, and when they shared the dumb apples.
Also, for all his charisma and good humor, Genesis isn't exactly one of the most agreeable people on the planet. When he's in a bad mood, he really isn't afraid to show it. In a conversation revealed by one of Angeal's fan club newsletters, He wasn't afraid to tell Angeal that he hated the plants in his room as he was bothered by the bugs coming from them. He also turned very angry and lashed out viciously at Sephiroth during their spar in the training room because he was terribly envious and frustrated with the other man's fame. During the events of Crisis Core, while he was suffering from the effects of degradation, Genesis didn't care much if Zack understood his dramatic ramblings or interpretations of LOVELESS, thinking him an idiot. Genesis has no qualms about using people to his advantage, whether they're his copies on the battlefield or his own best friends.

Before the events of Crisis Core, he was able to keep himself in check even after being hurt in the training room incident as he cared about maintaining his pride and he acknowledged that things did get out of hand. But when he had discovered his degradation, he practically let everything go and stopped caring about pride because to him, pride didn't matter to men who became monsters. However, towards the end of Crisis Core, when Genesis had finally lost all the means he had to find healing through the methods Hollander suggested (receiving S-Cells), he turned towards a final solution: dying with the last shreds of pride he had as a SOLDIER.
Since Minerva told him in a silent sequence that his life's work isn't over yet, Genesis had recovered his SOLDIER pride. Thanks to the time he spent asleep, he had also gotten over most of his guilt over his actions during the Genesis War. Moving forward, from his awakening (which is the canon point I'm taking him from), Genesis would be able to keep his temper in check and be the more sociable man he once was.
In a nutshell, Genesis is a smart and extroverted man with a strong sense of ambition and pride. He has a long scar over his left shoulder due to the training room incident. He can also summon a large black wing to sprout out from underneath his left shoulder blade. Fully extended, the wing is almost twice Genesis' height in length. Due to his wealthy upbringing, it had been ingrained in him to carry himself in a regal manner that makes him seem dominant and powerful.
His auburn hair that leans more towards brown than bright red is clipped in a short, stylish, layered cut which sets him apart from the other 1st Class SOLDIERs. He has very expressive cerulean blue eyes that glow faintly due to the mako in his body. Although Genesis can wear various expressions well, from intense anger to an open sadness, his natural expression seems to show the way he holds people at a distance with his thin eyebrows slanted up, his blue eyes bright and clever, and his full, rosy lips resting into a natural smirk. He wears one piercing on his right ear: a long dangling silver earring.
When it comes to dressing up, Genesis likes all the little comforts and showing off a bit of his expensive tastes and fiery personality. While his customized SOLDIER uniform mimics Sephiroth's own, he had chosen to not go shirtless and instead made himself more comfortable with a long-sleeved turtleneck black shirt made of a finer, and probably more expensive knitted material than the ordinary SOLDIER uniform seen on Zack and Angeal.
Outside of the SOLDIER uniform, Genesis would most likely keep his well-dressed look with fitted long-sleeved shirts and tailored pants that slip comfortably into his choice of heeled boots or match well with fine leather shoes. He prefers to wear the shoes with a little heel for an added height advantage and because it helps with the way he carries himself so regally.

As part of SOLDIER and required to undergo mako enhancements, Genesis is gifted with superhuman strength, speed, agility, reflexes and stamina. By superhuman strength, that means he could lift and swing around a broadsword that's as long as he is tall single-handedly, without any difficulty. His speed and agility puts him on par with the best fighters in his world.
Among all the 1st Class SOLDIERs, Genesis is notable for his affinity with magic. He is able to channel magic energy into his weapon to deal stronger blows. He is also able to call forth his own unique spells with a fire-type appearance such as dark energy, flash (where blades of light surround the enemy and close in on them), homing (basically a bunch of fireballs chasing an enemy down), and magic sword (where red bolts of energy in the shape of Genesis' sword cut down enemies). His ultimate attack is Apocalypse wherein he summons golden runes with LOVELESS' words from above to immobilize a target and bombard them with intense energy.
Genesis is also capable of flight with his one wing, although exactly how (if it's physics or magic) is questionable.
