[It was only a matter of time before this happened. Sephiroth opts for voice — text is too impersonal for this, and video reveals too much. He’s prefer to hear intonation, for what little it might reveal for a man like Genesis.
And for a man like Sephiroth, to boot.]
Do you think you could avoid me forever, Genesis?
[Oh, he had seen him during all that mess with the kidnapped and the cultists wanting to use them as blood sacrifices. It isn’t a face he’d mistake anywhere, even if it had been fleeting in the chaos.]
[ Well, he certainly was right to pick voice. Genesis would have replied with one if Sephiroth were to just send him a text message. When he replies, it sounds pretty clear that he had taken his time to calm down, think about a proper response.
His voice comes through measured and almost formal in tone. ]
I was sure we would get into contact one way or another. Though I thought it was better to stay out of your life.
[ It still lingered in his mind: the memory of Nibelheim, the confrontation, being told to rot. After years of mulling over this, giving up completely once all hope for a cure or for comrades were lost, deciding to just pick on Zack just to lead him to a final battle in Banora... it was difficult seeing Sephiroth's face all of a sudden during the siege upon the cultists. ]
[He doesn't know what to do with a reply like that, a statement that he didn't expect from Genesis whose actions, insofar as he remembers, had done very little to incite such a sentiment.
Were he the sort to freely scoff, Sephiroth would've done it. But the audio picks up no such sound.]
Since when has that been a concern of yours? With all you've done on Gaia, you know that Shinra and SOLDIER alike would be hounding your every step.
[And by proxy, Sephiroth's involvement was assured. It already had been.]
Isn’t it so? Just thought to try a new style. As I thought, it doesn’t suit me, huh?
[ A little bitterness in their humor, though that’s very much directed to himself. Anyway, he’s feeling cautious. Sephiroth doesn’t seem to have been the one from the Nibelheim incident... and from the way he spoke, it seemed as if he was still very much the 1st Class hero of Shinra he was groomed to be. ]
Say, you’ve always been a man with a sharp mind—what’s the last you remember of me?
[ If his hypothesis is right, he and Sephiroth must be from different times. ]
[His hypothesis is indeed very correct, and one shared with the rest of those he's spoken with from Gaia, even if Sephiroth is unaware of just what awaits him in the future.
Even so. A part of him is unwilling to let Genesis lead the conversation as he sees fit, dismissing his statement with the reply of a "new style", and so the SOLDIER takes hold of the reins, reflecting an assumption back.]
Why? Are you under the impression our timelines don't match?
[Given the rest he's spoken to... well. Not his first rodeo with this in particular.]
[ Genesis answers curtly. That’s exactly it. Well, seems as if he isn’t here to play nice at least. He might as well just give him what he wants. He isn’t interested in picking fights. Not anymore. ]
I am perfectly fine! Thank you![She let out a little embarrassed huff at that, then whined.] I don't recall you having anything this bad though. How did you manage!?
I had ears, a tail, and somehow I let off a musk that attracted people to me, but that didn’t bother me that much. Tell me, Hana, how is it affecting you?
Trust me, I was plenty attracted to you. I figured that out. This is different. Just... it's different. [So embarrassed. Should not have called. Bad thinking on her part.]
[ Well, Genesis knew Hana was attracted to him. Well, why else would she have kissed him back when they first met on the beach. But... he doesn't get what she's getting at. ]
[That's a lot tossed into a single statement, and while Sephiroth's trust of his ex-friend runs narrow at best, it's impossible not to fish for more than that.]
Up in flames by my hands, is your meaning? I wouldn't do that.
[He's lying, surely he is. A hint at his origins? Sephiroth keeps that particular insecurity of his wound up tight, nestled beneath too-many layers of armor. He's certain he'd not allow it to crack at Genesis' hands, of all people.]
The you that you are now would not do such a thing, that is for sure.
[They pause, putting his word together before saying them. He's far more careful now than he was under the sway of degradation.]
Before that day the degradation was revealed to me, did you think I was capable of wiping out everyone in Banora? Did you think I would have it in me to slaughter the foster family that raised me, even?
The truth destroyed us both... and everything around us.
[Genesis has an inkling that Sephiroth wouldn't hear him out. Or Sephiroth might even just call him a liar. But he'll hold fast to what he knows and what he believes.]
[It is ABSOLUTELY a bad idea, but she found her fingers giving him a ping of her location before she could say no.]
[She sat in her apartment, on the floor, curled on a pillow with her legs under her, and bowed over, thunking her head on the floor a moment, her lop ears falling over her head.]
I really think it might be a bad idea though. I figured out that I'm an Iris moon phase thing, by the way. But it's not as... nice as your Cordis ears.
[And Genesis moves as quickly as he can over to where Hana's unit was-- which really wasn't that far from him. He rings the intercom device at the door, speaking over it to let her know that it was him and not some stranger.]
[The silence runs long. He's right about one thing; Sephiroth is not a man made of kneejerk reactions, but his gut wants him to declare this a lie. All of it.
And yet he cannot help but think back to the others from their planet, their hesitations upon meeting Sephiroth. How some of them looked at him, with fire or shock in their eyes, when he made his presence known. As if they knew something that he did not; as if time gave them an advantage, whereas he was left in the dark.
They are vague pieces that can slot into each other, to form a bigger picture, should he allow them. Should he allow them?]
Even if I believed you, what is that I hear in your voice now, Genesis? Don't tell me that's regret.
